Guidance for Review of Papers for National Meetings

For summary papers (to be presented at the ANS national meetings), it should be borne in mind that the principal benefit of conference attendance is that it gives professionals an opportunity to get together and find out what their peers are doing. As such, NISD does not necessarily want a detailed technical review of the papers. What is desired is to reject the trivial or ridiculous papers. This makes for a review process that is easy and efficient. It is useful to the author to make comments for his or her use, but bear in mind that it is difficult to ensure that a paper has been revised to meet the expectations of the reviewer. There are provisions to reject a paper unless revisions are made; however, if several reviewers insist on revisions before acceptance. Unfortunately, the net result is generally unnecessary delays and frustrations. This can be particularly difficult with foreign papers due to the additional communication problems of further delays and translation. It should be noted that submission of papers must be in camera ready format so that there is an extra burden on reviewers to edit papers for grammar and style per the criteria in the call for papers. ANS HQ no longer performs editorial review of summary papers for national meetings. There is additional guidance in the ANS National Program Committee Manual for National Meeting Organizers.

For full papers which are to be published in a referee journal, the review and style criteria of the target journal will apply and are usually communicated thus in the call for papers.

Typically, the Role of the Division Representative in this process is to combine all the comments for a given paper into a single set, edit them for tone, eliminate redundant comments, and paste the result into his/her section of the review comments for that paper on the COS paper review system. ANS National then prepares emails back to each corresponding author along with the overall conclusion regarding acceptance of the paper.
